Over the Hills

Really cool site – a collaboration between french agency Ultranoir and illustrator and artist McBess. A 3d gramophone allows you to grab the needle and crank up the motor – and dive into the music in a dark 3d world. Love all the 3d interactions, such as rotating your view, placing the needle on the record, opening the side panel and playing a piano along to the music. And the sound design is fantastic – rotate your view away from the speaker on the gramophone and the music sounds muffled. It looks amazing too, the stark black world sprinkled with white – really great work.

Lovely site of band J.Roddy Walston & The Business, and their song “Same Days” – this is their interactive music video. Love the build up of video and the way the interactive element – dragging around – mimics the video itself to create a kind of illusion. Very simple, but beautifully done, short and sweet.

New EP from German band OK Kid. Love the way the video grid builds up, bringing in one video at a time, and the cool little transitions that reveal text and so on. Lovely transition to the track playing and so on, nicely thought out. For a bonus – it’s also responsive – nice work.

24 Hours of Happy

Music video of Pharrell Williams – Happy. Really simple and elegant – 24 hours of people dancing to the track – all throughout the various periods of the day. You can click and drag around the wheel to jump to different times – with the keyframes sliding around behind the time wheel. Love the interface, really useful, intuitive and looks great – I also love the concept – just a great idea and a great execution of digital work – no one is going to sit through a 24 hour long music video, but interactive makes this easy.

Fantastic work for the London Symphony Orchestra. Playing Ravel’s Bolero, you can watch the music from various angles, with up to 4 at once – with close ups on the various sections. You can drag around the views and select which angle you want, really customisable and a nice way to watch and explore the composition. Love the orchestra view with all the shapes and colours and the  nice descriptions of the various instruments. Loads of nice transitions and animations bringing it all together, really nice experience.

Incredible interactive music video from Arcade Fire. Using your phone and desktop/laptop webcam together to provide an immersive interactive experience. You can pan around with your phone and glows and distortion affects the current scene, adding a fun dimension to the video. There are several scenes and effects that you can play around with, from dots on a face drawing lines to your cursor smudging the colours. The technical implementation is pretty damn cool – check out the Unit 9 blog to see it explained. Really fun and a great way to play around with a music video – much more immersive than a simple video on YouTube.

Love this interactive musical experience for Goldfrapp. Featuring a vinyl-esque disc rotating in a photographic scene, clicking on the disc gives you up to 4 I guess musical points, which trigger certain samples resulting in a different tune and melody each time you interact with it. Love the various scenes and sounds, offering a moment of calm and respite in the middle of the chaotic internet. Fun just to play with and take in the beautiful photography and interesting music.

Website of Bang & Olufsen’s new in-ear headphones the H3. One long scrolling site with a navigation bar following you down the page, each section with animated features and information about the product. Really like the timeline where you can see the range of headphones B&O have made over the years. Also really like the image gallery and the way your view zooms into the grid of images. Lots of nice detail in each of the individual content modules, nice tidy promo site.

Site celebrating the 10th year anniversary and showing the history of the Ed Banger music label. A simple site – scrolling downwards reveals animations and shows key moments in the label’s history. Lots of detail – from dragging around music covers to interactive keyboards – it’s fun to explore and play. Love the history summary panel where you can see the entire page and navigate around. Just a nice example of a timeline based design which fun to explore.

Tanlines - Not The Same

Fun interactive music video presenting you with keyed out videos of the various tracks in the song – all wrapped up in an old school Photoshop interface. You can turn on and off the various tracks i.e. vocal, guitar, keyboard and so on – and also change the background to a life fish tank, NYC, Jupiter and so on. Irreverent and playful, a fun interactive music video.

The Rational Keyboard

The Rational Keyboard

Interesting site this – The Rational Keyboard. Has to be seen and played with – best explained by the man himself: “The Rational Keyboard is an HTML5 web app demonstrating a consonance model injust intonation. It’s kind of like a piano with infinitely many keys (one for each rational number) that move around and resize based on what sounds good.”

Essentially – play around with it, fascinating work and utterly mesmerising – looks great too. You can spend a long time here playing around with the sounds and watching how the keys blend and change size.
