Interactive music video for LCD Sound System’s latest tune. WebVR enabled, put it on your device and experience a FPS of a ball floating through a series of 3D scenes that react to the music. You can select other characters to see their perspective too, on desktop you can toggle between the views. Lot of fun, nice concept well executed.

Do it yourself AI project from Google. Create kits from a list of components such as Raspberry Pi, and make for example a natural language recognizer. Pretty impressive stuff, wrapped in a nicely designed site with transitions and animations to bring the content to life.

Beautiful experience and collaboration with Google Play Music and Hilltop Hoods. Through The Dark was written by Dan Smith for his son Liam, who was diagnosed with leukaemia at eight years old. The site takes you through an interactive 3D music video – using the scroll mechanic to change the position of your view. On mobile your accelerometer performs same task. Your view transitions between the light and the dark of the world, each view with subtly different perspectives of the same scene, light representing hope and the dark, fear. Love the simple mechanic and the stunning use of 3D to draw you in. Beautiful idea brought to life in a fantastic way.

Lovely site promoting 100 years of the American National Parks System. Choosing five of the hardest to access National Parks, Google brings an immersive exploration of these parks guided by the rangers that work there every day. You can explore a crevasse, fly with thousands of bats, soar over an active volcano, dive through shipwrecks – many shot with 360 video/audio. Each location has a few interactive moments, like scrubbing through time to see glacier melt. High production values, and a beautiful and immersive experience taking you to these iconic National Parks.

Site for Google’s Cultural Institute. Teaming up with some of the worlds most iconic venues and performances experience these moments from the stage in 360 video. Lovely type treatment and nice bold imagery, love the 360 video which really dives you into the experience. One of the things I love about it is how nicely it works on mobile, with an option to use your gyro or swipe to scan around the environment. Nice work.

Take an interactive journey through the iconic recording studio Abbey Road. Using a custom photo shoot and Google Streetview technology to show the insides of the famous studio. The amount of detail is incredible, from historic photos mapped to your viewpoint, inline videos of musicians, and even an interactive mixing studio. They used high res cameras to take ultra high detail of each panorama – if you read the about page you will really see the amount of detail and technical craftsmanship that has gone into this project. You can get lost exploring the studios and all the different views and snippets of information – it is a real feat and a real pleasure to explore – great piece of work.

Nice site celebrating 1000 Chrome Experiments – containing all the various Chrome Experiments published over the years. Love the fun exploratory interface, that is just fun to play with and explore. The way it loads in the experiments without pushing you out to the various sites is also well thought out, preloading the content and making it easy to go back to the homepage. Like the way you can visualise the grid in various ways, and even a mini script editor so you can play around with it yourself!

Incredible interactive music video from Arcade Fire. Using your phone and desktop/laptop webcam together to provide an immersive interactive experience. You can pan around with your phone and glows and distortion affects the current scene, adding a fun dimension to the video. There are several scenes and effects that you can play around with, from dots on a face drawing lines to your cursor smudging the colours. The technical implementation is pretty damn cool – check out the Unit 9 blog to see it explained. Really fun and a great way to play around with a music video – much more immersive than a simple video on YouTube.

Quite an accomplishment – Google Creative Lab have made a bit of a tech demo / visualisation of part of our galaxy for Chrome browsers. I love their disclaimer ‘Warning: Scientific accuracy is not guaranteed. Please do not use this visualization for interstellar navigation.’ all a bit of fun. Love the way you can zoom right in and even see other stars each with a bit of explanation and knowledge. Nice animation that show orbits of suns, planets etc – Gliese 570 is a great example – nice detail.

Jam With Chrome

Pretty amazing feat from Google – Jam With Chrome. A multi-user musical jam session! The level of detail and complexity visually simplified here is incredible (It’s all created in javascript and so on too). Mind-blowing really… Really fun to play with and nice angular art-direction, loads of nice animation and transitions. Love the ‘pro’ and ‘easy’ ways to play, loads of little customisable features such as bpm, key, distortion and so on. Really really cool, looks great, and fun to play with.

Chrome Experiment #500

By | @google | No Comments

500 of the best Chrome experiments – a mixture of the latest WebGL / CSS3 / Javascript experiments. Love the interface – a swirling mass of shapes colour coded by subject, for example 3d, physics, and so on – which by itself is fun to play with. Rolling over the dots gives more info about that project, clicking through will take you to the example. Clean, clear, fun – what more could you want – loads of great experiments to discover.
