Enough

A journey through a 3D world filled with light, music and brooding darkness. Each scene is accompanied with a page from the story, each scene the jellyfish like creature following your cursor throughout each scene. Love the hints and sparks of light emanating from your cursor and how each scene is introduced – you get a real feeling of the 3D space as your view floats into the scenes.

Nice creative personal project from creative and developer duo. Using a barrage of 3D effects the site uses Google Maps Streetview to place you in an urban desert complete with volumetric sand, lighting, trees, and audio. Nice little backstory to the project and beautifully crafted the interface, menus, animations and interactions all enhance this cool project. Really pushes the boundaries of what is possible with browser based 3D.

Fascinating site that uses peoples 3D data as a landscape to interact with. All executed through an experimental 3D interface where you pan and rotate your view. Feeling akin to something out of Blade Runner – the music the design – it is all an assault on the senses. The 3D bodies are moving around as you interact with the scene and you can play races that float across the moving 3D contours of the bodies. Love the 3D elements and the experimental look and feel, really cool to see digital experiences like this. Quite an experience…

Surreal and beautiful – a ‘walking simulator’ – probably best described as an immersive interactive digital short film. Starting in the woods you guide your character along a path – you control your view from a 360 degree camera. You explore your environment, clicking brings your character to investigate a certain spot on the ground. It gets more surreal the further you explore, across various environments – a real feat in interactive storytelling. Love the way it totally immerses you into this strange world, drawing you in further and further. Beautifully executed and well crafted – nice to see more of this kind of thing that really highlights the potential of the interactive medium.

Really cool site – a collaboration between french agency Ultranoir and illustrator and artist McBess. A 3d gramophone allows you to grab the needle and crank up the motor – and dive into the music in a dark 3d world. Love all the 3d interactions, such as rotating your view, placing the needle on the record, opening the side panel and playing a piano along to the music. And the sound design is fantastic – rotate your view away from the speaker on the gramophone and the music sounds muffled. It looks amazing too, the stark black world sprinkled with white – really great work.

Fun site for Bolthouse Farms to promote healthy eating by tracking how little people post socially about fruit & vegetables. Interesting way of showing this by loads of fun experiments such as clouds of grapes, a row of fruit you can squish, a carrot keyboard and so on! Fun way of highlighting the difference in healthy vs unhealthy food in a non educational / boring way.

Where is Danny Torrance?

Site promoting Stephen King’s new book ‘Doctor Sleep’, the sequel to the Shining. Lots of windows revealing different scenes from the book, quite a cinematic experience – from doors animating down corridors, driving scenes – to hacked javascript glitching – it all creates a tense mood. Its been a while since i’ve seen multi-windowed story telling – and this is a great example. If you hook up your phone to the same network you can have a dual-screen experience – use your mobile screen to unlock a door and so on, it adds an extra layer of interactivity and story telling. Really nice, interactive, and unexpected execution of a promo site for a book.

Incredible interactive music video from Arcade Fire. Using your phone and desktop/laptop webcam together to provide an immersive interactive experience. You can pan around with your phone and glows and distortion affects the current scene, adding a fun dimension to the video. There are several scenes and effects that you can play around with, from dots on a face drawing lines to your cursor smudging the colours. The technical implementation is pretty damn cool – check out the Unit 9 blog to see it explained. Really fun and a great way to play around with a music video – much more immersive than a simple video on YouTube.

Love this interactive musical experience for Goldfrapp. Featuring a vinyl-esque disc rotating in a photographic scene, clicking on the disc gives you up to 4 I guess musical points, which trigger certain samples resulting in a different tune and melody each time you interact with it. Love the various scenes and sounds, offering a moment of calm and respite in the middle of the chaotic internet. Fun just to play with and take in the beautiful photography and interesting music.

Site promoting Danny Boyle’s new film Trance. Harking back to the days of Flash experimental sites this short experience is a maze of clips – like a fruit machine – clicking on a certain section reveals snippets from the film. Incorporating the films concept of being in a trance, you unveil memories – short erratic scenes – treated with ‘glitch’ artefacts and so on – nice to see a site just being an experience rather than a source of information.

Fun interactive music video presenting you with keyed out videos of the various tracks in the song – all wrapped up in an old school Photoshop interface. You can turn on and off the various tracks i.e. vocal, guitar, keyboard and so on – and also change the background to a life fish tank, NYC, Jupiter and so on. Irreverent and playful, a fun interactive music video.

Fun site from Singapore promoting Maki-San an eatery selling sushi, wraps, salads and so on. Love the animations and the transitions from each section (the whole page gets wrapped up in roll!) the attention to detail is incredible – all the various sections fun to explore and bringing something new. Also a big fan of the music and sound fx! A really fun and playful site.

Daybreak

By | @NorthKingdom, WEBSITES | No Comments

Site for Daybreak, an online drama series promoting AT&T and their 4G network, presented through a series of sites and an app to provide an alternative reality experience. Love the level of detail across the sites, the vertical scroll which for example shows the sun setting and rising as you scroll, the cool Jackboxer site – loads of animation and great art direction. Really cool sites, that a fun to explore, look great, and work well.

Hennesey White Rabbit

Site promoting Hennessy VS and their new campaign ‘what’s your white rabbit?’. Plunging you down the ‘rabbit hole’, and taking you to strange interactive 3d scenes, love the exploration feel to it all – moving you mouse around the scene,  clicking on strange objects and so on. Nice to see a site like this again, well crafted, fun to play with and looks great.
