Samsung Music

By | WEBSITES | No Comments

Interesting site promoting Samsung’s music phones. You can create your own 3D ‘soundscape’, the closer various colourful blocks are to the phone the louder their respective sounds are. There is a wide selection of sounds, which you drag around in the 3D space, you can save it and share it and so on, the gallery is quite nice too. I like the idea and the way you can drag the blocks of sound to create a virtual space which you can then explore also in first person perspective, pretty cool.

Hotel 626

By | WEBSITES | No Comments

Immersive site, open only from 6 PM to 6 AM, set in a haunted hotel and presented in a first person perspective. The story starts as you awaken and try to escape the hotel, you must complete a series of tasks to get out. These tasks range from clicking on doorways whilst navigating the hotel’s hallways to taking pictures of a ‘thing’ to blind it, to trying not to wake the baby from hell. It all has high production value and is very well crafted, from the sound design to the animation to the video. I particularly like the 3d video and the interactivity (although limited) whilst moving through the hotel, the movement it provides feels relatively realistic.

Its quite intriguing as it’s all for Doritos, under the guise of the ‘Snack Strong Productions’, who just make nice sites and games like this one. There is really little branding involved – just the concept that Doritos the brand is providing enjoyable experiences like ‘The Quest’ that was earlier in 2008.

Calibre Photo

By | WEBSITES | No Comments

Photography portfolio site showcasing photographs in a 3D environment. Clean and simple interface allows the photographs to speak for themselves, drag and rotate to view the photos from different directions. I particularly like the way you rotate the camera to get different angles, it gives the site a lot of depth and allows you to see the images in a fun way.

Panasonic – Everything Matters

By | WEBSITES | No Comments

Great site promoting the concept ‘everything matters’ for Panasonic. Presented in a 3d universe, sections of the site showcase how important the details are for all Panasonic products. Explore the sections to see the stories behind the details, from interactive sponges to visitor’s submitted thoughts. Very nice looking and lots of good animations and nice interactivity, providing a more human personality to the brand.

Pen Web

Really interesting site, showcasing the creative awards of Pen. A very simple, minimal site where you control the panning and movement of the camera whilst images appear and float from bottom to top, pausing when you rollover them, the camera zooms in when you click. Nice.

Lumina Live

Site of events company Lumina Live, specialising in creating interactive events in art, music, design and fashion. Whats cool about this site are the 3d transitions and that it is open for the audience to create their own pixel artwork on the site, sequence music and so on – you can create an identity and view other peoples additions to the site. The 3d pixellated background provides a subtle backdrop to the various sections of the site – sit back and view the videos and artwork and so on from a distance!

Beach Volleyball

Beach Volleyball

Very interesting site for the German beach volleyball team. I’ve selected this because of the mechanism used to explore each section of the site. Each section has its own 3D scene, using your mouse to move left to right the movement causes the camera to move and pan along a path. This all provides a very fluid and intuitive navigation system that looks and feels great – with the camera floating through the scene it gives a really interesting and enjoyable way of exploring the site.

MINT

Website of ‘MINT’ brazilian fashion agency. Showcasing shoots and magazine spreads, the 3D floating thumbnail navigation interface crops up again, controlled by the mouse wheel you zoom through the portfolio. The mouse controls the panning and tilt of your view and is nicely done. Lots of nice transitions and effects make this an enjoyable experience. Nice photos too…

The Eco Zoo

The Eco Zoo

Beautiful, stunning work! Not quite sure what it is for – but it is inspiring you to take better care of the environment. Just simply an amazing website. Built around a cut out concept where the stories of various characters are told, through a cut out look and feel executed in a 3d fashion. When you click on a character your view zooms to the pop up book of their story, the beauty of it is the panning and rotating of the camera around the book, there is a huge attention to detail – by rotating the view you can see more details and explore the scene. I love the concept and the look and feel of the whole site, it is truly inspiring – where technology and design meet in unison – the 3d element is smooth and perfectly executed, the visuals are great and fun.

Uniqlo Try

Uniqlo Try

Wow, another amazing Japanese website for Uniqlo – the presentation of opinions of 343 customers to a bra Uniqlo make! The work created for Uniqlo has been consistently amazing, always technically brilliant backed up with a nice concept. This is another example of that, instead of producing something simple & boring, something that is essentially about a survey, a fantastic 3d representation of opinions has been created. Floating through the opinions the way the data is presented is constantly flowing from one state to another, making new 3d shapes, and morphing colours. I really like the crisp presentation coupled with the smooth transitions and fast performance of the site. Technically proficient and well executed to present a really enjoyable user experience.

I have long been a fan of Japanese web design and its really good to see so many amazing sites appearing. The mix of music, technical excellence, and simple layouts provide the fun, colourful, and enjoyable approach that is often common place in Japanese designs. So often the more imaginative, conceptual side of web design is ignored for the slicker, polished look and feel, it is so refreshing to see a different viewpoint.

Play > Smart

Play > Smart

Another great Japanese website, this time promoting the Smart car in Japan. In 3d you can design and drive your own Smart car, the great thing about the driving part is the way it is thought out. Presented in a ‘join the dots’ fashion, you drive your car from point to point, when completed the camera zooms out to reveal the picture you have just made, you can then download it or try again. There are several puzzles to complete and you get points to unlock design parts for your car. This is all set in a fun, easy to use look and feel, just a fun well thought out and executed site. Similar in many ways to the Red Bull Flightlab.

Spectra

Spectra

Very interesting way of presenting news, Spectra ‘visual newsreader’ for msnbc. You selected the channels to view, which then appear in a rotating ‘cloud’ of news items. The news items can be explored, saved, or you can click through to the full story. Your 3D view of the items can be changed and even interacted with a connected webcam – which is fantastic – as it works on the premise of colour. Each channel of news is a different colour i.e. blue for entertainment, hold up something blue to the camera and blue items will appear. What I really like is the attention to detail and the host of options and customisation available, your choices are saved, you can search – etc. Its a really nice concept and its always great to see new ways of presenting data in an interesting way.

Audi RS 6

Audi RS 6

Another great Papervision site, this time promoting the Audi RS 6. Well, Papervision again used for great effect, this site shows how you can convert nice concepts into reality. The individual boxes react to the soundtrack and also act as a mask for a video. They also move along paths in 3d space to make up the interface, all very slick. Really like the attention to detail regarding the overall almost cinematic experience.
